Soul Housing

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is recuperative care?

Recuperative care provides short-term, safe transitional housing with medical oversight for individuals who no longer need hospital care but are not yet ready to return to independent living. Soul Housing provides a safe environment, meals, wraparound medical and mental health services in a supportive setting that promotes healing and recovery.

Not directly through Soul Housing, but there are dedicated programs designed to help individuals experiencing homelessness find stable housing. At Soul Housing, we provide short-term, medically supportive housing that helps those who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness regain stability, address health needs, and transition toward longer-term housing solutions.
In general, housing systems across California often prioritize individuals with urgent needs, such as serious medical conditions, safety concerns, or high vulnerability. At Soul Housing, we collaborate closely with healthcare and case management partners to ensure that those with significant medical or discharge needs receive timely placement.
Soul Housing provides recuperative care to individuals who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless and are referred by a medical provider following hospitalization or clinical treatment. Eligibility is determined by medical necessity and partnership criteria established with managed care plans.
Vulnerability typically includes chronic illness, recent hospitalization, mental or physical disabilities, or advanced age. Our partners assess these factors when making referrals to ensure that individuals in greatest medical need receive timely placement.
There is no cost to participants. Soul Housing is funded through contracts with California’s managed care plans, which cover the full cost of services for eligible members.
Recuperative care includes medical supervision, medication support, monitoring of health conditions, and coordination with healthcare providers. While it is not a hospital setting, staff assist with medications, monitor well-being, and communicate with healthcare providers when appropriate.
Under California law, recuperative care is designed as short-term support lasting up to six months. Otherwise, the specific length of stay depends on the participant’s recovery progress, managed care plan guidelines, and available discharge options.
When your stay concludes, Soul Housing staff work with referring care teams and community partners to share discharge information and connect participants with available housing or support resources. While affordable housing in LA is scarce and Soul Housing cannot guarantee placement in long-term housing, our team will do its absolute best to connect each participant with the most suitable available options as their discharge date nears.
